The Future Is Unplastic: Why Grove’s “Unplastic Shop” Is More Than a Trend—It’s a Movement

In a world where convenience has long been prioritized over consequence, a quiet revolution is underway—and it starts right at home. Enter the Unplastic Shop, a bold initiative by Grove Collaborative, designed to help consumers rethink everyday products and reduce their exposure to plastic without sacrificing performance, style, or ease.

I love this shop. There’s even an app you can download from the App store. Grove isn’t just another eco-friendly shop. It’s a response to one of the most urgent and personal health and environmental crises of our time. They remind me of the Environmental Working Group, they’re hyper-focused on the cause and supporting to fill a void in consumers lives. It’s time to get Microplastics out of our bodies and support the enviroment.

The Wake-Up Call: Plastic Is No Longer “Out There”—It’s In Us 😱

Time to get real: plastic pollution is no longer just about oceans and landfills. Scientific research now shows that microplastics tiny particles under 5mm have been found throughout the human body, including blood, brain tissue, women’s placenta and even breastmilk. And yet, most people don’t even know how to reduce exposure. That’s the gap Grove is stepping into.

Even more alarming?

  • 90% of Americans are concerned about microplastics in their bodies
  • 79% consider it a human and environmental health crisis

What Is the “Unplastic Shop”?

The Unplastic Shop is a curated digital storefront created to help you swap out everyday household items for safer, lower-plastic alternatives from kitchenware to personal care. The mobile app is also user friendly.

Think 🤔

  • Glass and stainless steel instead of plastic food storage
  • Clean beauty and personal care without hormone-disrupting chemicals
  • Laundry and cleaning products designed to reduce microplastic shedding

What makes it stand out is its science-backed curation. Grove partnered with the Oceanic Preservation Society—the team behind The Plastic Detox—to ensure every product meets strict criteria:

  • No BPA or “forever chemicals” like PFAS
  • No endocrine-disrupting ingredients
  • Reduced or eliminated plastic contact with consumables

Why Grove Collaborative Created This

Grove Collaborative was founded with a mission to transform the consumer products industry into a force for human and environmental good. As the world’s first plastic-neutral retailer, the company has already removed millions of pounds of plastic from the environment and committed to reducing reliance on single-use plastics.

But the Unplastic Shop represents a deeper evolution of that mission. It acknowledges a hard truth: Recycling isn’t enough.

With only about 5% of plastic actually being recycled, the rest breaks down into microplastics polluting ecosystems and entering our bodies. So instead of asking consumers to “recycle better,” Grove is empowering them to consume differently.

The Environmental Reality We Can’t Ignore

Every year:

  • Over 11 million metric tons of plastic enter our oceans
  • Plastic can take 20 to 500 years to decompose
  • Microplastics now exist in our air, water, soil—and bodies

This isn’t just an environmental issue it’s a public health crisis hiding in plain sight. Not enough awareness is put on the microplastic issues especially from our heads of states. Consumers are ready for change.

Why This Matters Right Now

We are at a turning point because consumers are no longer just asking, “Is this product effective?”

They’re also asking:

  • Is it safe for my body?
  • What’s the long-term impact on my family?
  • What footprint am I leaving behind?

Change: Small Swaps, Big Impact

You don’t need to overhaul your life overnight. The simplest of changes can have a huge effect in your health. You can start with these small changes:

  • Swap plastic containers for glass
  • Choose refillable or reusable products
  • Reduce exposure to hidden chemicals
  • Use wooden cutting boards instead of plastic

The truth is—what’s in your home matters the most and thanks to innovators like Grove Collaborative, making better choices is no longer complicated it’s accessible, informed, and honestly… kind of cool. It’s time to swop out the plastics and go back to using glass.
